Everything I love about my two favorite genres is in this book. It's just so consistently good! The first book in ages where the romantic archs don't bother me at all. Also, it's so nice to read a young adult book where nothing is dumbed down. I'm really pumped for the next one!
3.5 stars... a little better than the first book... but it only really took off after the 80% mark.

The hard part about reviewing and rating these atrociously long books that don’t grip your attention the whole time is that you start off hating it, and then often times it closes up strongly, so you don’t know exactly what to think about it. That’s what happened here.
The moment The Exiled Queen arrived from the library, I thought, “This book is too long.” I’ve read my fair share of big 600, 700, 800-paged novels; I’ve even read the monster that is The Count of Monte Cristo and loved it, but something about the start of The Exiled Queen did not make me love it. Probably because I was a bit iffy about The Demon King.
After picking up and putting down the book a few times as I struggled through the first half, I was ready to put it aside to read a few other books that were due soon at the library. But around the halfway point, things began to get a bit more interesting.
I won’t get into plot details, but there is a lot of double-crossing and tricky deals and alliances that wrap around The Exiled Queen. Han Alister gets himself mixed in with a couple of contracts and deals that conflict and have no resolution.
Upon finishing The Exiled Queen, I immediately wanted to get the next book (sadly it is not yet released). Based on final impressions, I think it was a definite step up from The Demon King, but I still didn’t love it. Looking back, I also realize that I can’t even count The Exiled Queen among the longest books I’ve read, but there was something about it that made it seem so intimidatingly lengthy. I don’t really like how, in the end, there is very little actual resolution. A lot of things are started, but few things are tied up, and the main purpose of the novel seems to be to build up for the next book. (I was going to say the “grand finale” but then I realized that the series is extending beyond what I thought was a trilogy.) Overall, I ended up liking The Exiled Queen quite a bit. I felt a stronger attachment to the characters and developments than I did in The Demon King. I will be anxiously waiting for The Gray Wolf Throne.

This book was really good one of the first in a long while that really kept me engaged the whole time. I read the demon king years ago and always meant to continue and I’m so glad I did this was a great sequel
this series is so damn good! i really loved the school location as a big part of this story. the magic in this book is so interesting and raisa continues to amaze me. i wished there was more dancer but seeing han's development was wonderful. starting the next book right away <3
Let’s hear if for strong female characters. And I’m not talking about the cliche girl who doesn’t like typical girly things. Raisa is such an easy character to fall in love with. Is she a badass, that knows her way around a knife, can ride a horse, and defend herself? Yes. Does she also know how to woo and aww dressed to her elbows in finery and frills? Also yes. And I can’t forget Han. Wow. He’s smart, his decisions make sense, and his interaction with the antagonist confirms his stance as a well thought out, and nuanced mortally grey character. This was such a great read, and easily earns the categorization of an Epic fantasy. I can’t wait to devour book 3 and the scene has been more than sweet for an unbelievable ride to continue this story.
