Really not worth it the author didn't make me feel anything for Mata Hari

You were not merely a person unjustly accused of espionage, but someone who dared to challenge certain customs. And for that you could not be forgiven.

Interesting book about the life of Mata Hari, well researched and documented - although it left me with more answers than questions.

Born in Holland, she married young and had a daughter - and then decided to discard her old life as a snake discards his unwanted skin, and begin anew sans child nor husband. How a young lady, well brought up, fluent in many languages, educated became what today we would call a stripper and a very high end prostitute is really not looked into in depth. The consequences of her life, and her entry into the world of espionage, or not, is well documented as is the betrayal of the many men she served.

The book is written almost as a letter to her daughter, but at no time do we learn whether she ever saw her daughter again, after she initially left Holland for the dance halls of France.

Having read Paulo Coelho's previous works , I did expect a few things from this work as well. However , it did not live upto the usual works by him. The story seemed not detailed enough and the plot was haywire. Leaving you with a sense of incomplete plot when you finish the book.

I learnt more about Mata Hari through Wikipedia than I did reading this book.

Paulo Coelho does what he does best, which is to spin a tale of metaphors and look for deeper meaning in everything. The strategy worked in the Alchemist, but failed miserably here.

Mata Hari was actually a woman of many layers, driven to doing what she needed to do to keep life going, and inadvertently gaining notoriety for it. She lived a hard life, and went through poverty, sexual abuse and the grief of losing her children. She is far from the liberated, hippie seductress Coelho paints her to be in this book, and he does grave injustice portraying her as such a one dimensional person.

I honestly would not recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn about the life of such a controversial woman.

The crimes I did commit, I escaped, the greatest of which was being an emancipated and independent woman in a world ruled by men.

I wasn't familiar with Mata Hari as a historical figure before reading this, so I found the novel to be an interesting look into the life of a woman who lived more freely than society at the time allowed of women. The book is split into two parts, both taking the form of a letter (although I often forgot they were letters until I was dragged out of the story into commentary about writing the letter.) The first half is Mata Hari writing to her lawyer explaining the story of how she came to be on trial as a spy. The second half is a letter from her lawyer explaining the political system and corruption that led to her execution.

I enjoyed the story as an exploration of a maligned woman in history, but I felt the execution of the story telling left me unsatisfied. I would be interested to read a deeper dive into her story though.

I understand why Catholics confess, even though they must know priests share the same sins, or worse. It did not matter who was listening; what mattered was leaving ht wound open for the sun to purify and the rainwater to wash.

This felt incredibly relevant to today's world, though.
Liars, what little I know of them, are people who seek popularity and recognition. Even when faced with truth, they always find a way to escape, coldly repeating what had just been said or blaming the accuser of speaking untruths.

With all due respect to Mata Hari, this felt like Paulo Coelho just edited the Wikipedia article about her and added dialogues in between.

What a shallow and flat painting of a fascinating woman.
