This made me cry. I never understood why the tree gave and gave and the boy only took. The only thing the boy ever gave the tree was the happiness he got from what was given. Not all people even give that. I thought maybe the tree would be happier if the boy never came back, but I suppose it would be saddened. The giver tree reminds me of my mother, she gives and gives. She hates that nothing is ever given back. She rants and screams about it. I can never understand why she never stops giving.

I happened to see the Japanese version in a shop, and because it had been so long since I interacted with the English version I thought I’d try my hand at reading the basic hiragana 🤣

Some people see an abusive relationship, I see a beautifully tragic tale of taking your life - and nature - for granted. The story ends, but our lives don't have to be that way.

I love Shel Silverstein, but I find the Giving Tree incredibly masochistic. What is the lesson here?
