emotional
I don't quite know what to say about this book maybe because I'm sick with a cold haha but I felt mixed emotions reading it.
I thought the boy was selfish and ungrateful.. yet the tree always gave and gave and always tried to give happiness to the boy. Sacrificing everything for him. It's completely selfless on the tree's part which is admirable. It just irks me that the boy wasn't the least bit grateful.

A sad story of the tree that gives everything to the boy, young man, and adult man. The tree is left as a stump, then the old man returns, and they are finally together.
I wish this was a lighter book, but it speaks to so many realities about relationships, selfishness, sacrifice, and hope for something that is long in coming, if at all, and may not be worth the price.
Beautifully illustrated, although not a book for young children, in my mind, the themes are too deep. Good for learning about balance and boundaries.

He carves the tree when he’s a child. It’s obvious he’s a little shit from the beginning.
This is toxic relationship at its best.
Also he still comes and sits in the stump and the tree is happy. Fuck that.

I literally never review kid's books, particularly one so small as this, but this book is something special. Saw it in the store the other day and picked it up, because I've been wanting to build a little collection of books to read to my son after he's born (because you better believe my baby is going to LOVE READING), and I was so unexpectedly touched by the story and the message in this simple, little book.
Definitely a good one to have in your collection, if you're looking for books to read to your young ones =].

I hate this book. I don't know why it's even in my house. What a selfish asshole the boy is.
I gave this to my niece a few years ago. She wasn't ready for it - thinking that it was really sad. It wasn't until this year that she read it again by herself and she realized that it was awesome. She reads it all the time now. Shel Silverstein is one of the great poets of our nation and I will continue to buy his collections for my niece in the years to come.
