Is there a children's book more tragic than The Giving Tree? The story manages to capture horror, even though it is a tree, so well that I remember having nightmares about it as a child. And part of growing up is realizing that the tree is actually your parents, and then it just becomes so much sadder.

This book always made me cry when I was little. I know it's so easy to really read into it but I hate doing that to children's books. It's just a beautiful, wonderful book just like all of Silverstein's books.
This book brought tears to my eyes... it's a story about giving, and this tree gave all it had to give... I don't know if I would be willing to explain this to my children if they were to read this, but one thing I will say is that every man and woman who is living needs to read this. It's soulful and touching and deep, when you don't expect it to be. It caught me by surprise with the simplicity of it is pure flagrant...Wow.
How much I love this book is hindered; the fact that I must refrain from giving it more stars because I find the human character so heartless! Even as the tree ends up a stump the boy still does not give any thanks to his trusty old friend. Poor tree.
The little boy is super selfish. Spoiler alert! He pretty much kills the tree, the mother figure.
Maybe it's true that this is a classic.
Seriously? It taught me that some people are takers, and never satisfied, and some people are givers, and they wither up, lonely, and die.
As I am not a taker, I did not enjoy this book.
There are plenty of other books to make me feel sad about the state of the human condition.
