I remember this book making me sad when I was little, but it just irritated me as an adult. I read it to little girls ages 4, 5 and 9 and I saw how they also got sad during the book. So afterwards I asked them, “was this a good book or a bad book?” And thankfully they said bad. I then went on a rant to them on how it’s important we don’t give everything we have to someone if all they do is take take take- and why? Bc we don’t want to end up a sad little stump with nothing for herself bc we sacrificed everything we had and were for a man who even in the end, finds a way to use us.

I love this book and at times get annoyed when everyone wants to criticize it for being anti-feminist or sending the wrong message. I think it is a quaint story of a lesson well learned. However, with that said, in graduate school my friend, Sarah, and I had everyone rewrite the book from the feminist's point of few, ie, the tree. The outcome of the project rocked!

I found the co-dependecy disturbing and very unhealthy.

As a parent, the feeling when you pull this book out is a lot different. You start to see yourself as the Tree. That’s why I pulled this one out just to read to myself tonight. To let myself be one with tree as my own children go through their changes and milestones that make me slightly sad but also very happy.

I've been brushing up on my children's books. I can see why this is such a classic. I was surprised at how sad and poignant it was.

This story can leave you elated or depressed. Like other Silverstein books, it may LOOK like a childrens book, but may be best suited to more sophisticated kids.
