As a child I loved this book for the message about love and to be giving, as an adult I now see a message of loving yourself and not giving until you have nothing left... Such a good story with many lessons
i read this book over and over to my children. they love it, and i love how this simple story shows so much love.
I enjoyed THE GIVING TREE as a child and my children have enjoyed it as well. In that persepctive, it's a story of love unconditional.
Sure, with an adult's eye and with various intents, you can dismantle it and assign the tree and the boy whatever roles suit your preference.
So, I keep it on the kids' bookcase and keep my interpretation simple.

Leaves quite a deep sadness, almost like a nasty aftertaste nesting at the back of the throat, and yet it is like a hit song with deeply sad lyrics. There’s something addictive to the underlying message, which seems to be that there are Givers, there are Takers, and there isn’t much of anything that can change that.
Or perhaps it is merely a representation of how people actually treat one another.
Either way, a certainly well-reputed work.

At first blush, this is a sweet book about a boy and the tree that loves him. At second blush, this is a book about a tree that gives and gives and gives to the boy it loves and a boy who takes and takes and takes from the tree that loves him.
