Didn’t read this gem until the ripe age of 27. Whatta dark, little book that illicited a series of volatile emotions within myself. Not sure what that says about who I am at the moment or what I've allowed myself to "give" in relationships...All I know is it made me irrationally angry that this is read to children, especially little girls. I love Where the Sidewalk Ends but I do not like TGT - not sure if it's the end of my Silverstein days or not. Still undecided.

My childhood night time storytelling book. ♡ I think this book helped shape who I was, and made me into a better human over the years.
I remember, fondly, being introduced to the poetry and storytelling of Shel Silverstein when I was in elementary school. Quirky, in a Dr. Seuss and Lemony Snicket sort of way, Silverstein's work has been a staple in libraries both public and educational.
Did you know it was a Banned Book?
Apparently; "We dare you not to shed a tear over this touching story of a selfless tree who loves a boy. But it was a cynical interpretation of the tree's selfless giving as 'sexist content' that landed this Shel Silverstein classic on a Colorado library's banned book list in 1988. Ages 1-8."
While I NOW see this potential for this book to be viewed in this way, it does not fully diminish the ending of the tale where all we truly need in life is simplicity.
Not a personal favorite work of Silverstein's career, but not dismissed either, maybe with time "The Giving Tree" will capture my heart.

Horrible story with adorable illustrations for the first three pages. Then just horrible all the way around. A child's picture book of selfishness and enabling.
All time favorite childrens book. I read it a million times when I was growing up. I gave it to my nephew recently. I hope he grows to love it as much as I did!
I totally almost cried when I read this aloud to the kids I babysit. You have to love this book and Shel Silverstein. The end.
