About as good a book you are going to find on how the Third Reich ruled Europe. The short answer was cruelly, inefficiently, stupidly, and above all else, poorly. The endless stories about all of the little madmen that ruled over Europe for a handful of years makes for endlessly compelling reading, even as the various descriptions of genocide, massacres, and evil make you want to put the book down. And Mazower's conclusions about the ultimate effects that the New Order left on the world ring especially true.

Excellent book that nicely balances times\places\themes of the Nazi occupation of Europe, providing extensive detail while maintaining strong analysis that doesn't feel forced or clunky
