Hope Scroggs is back in her hometown of Bramble, Texas with one simple plan: get married to her high school flame, Slate. One problem though, he's gotten married to her twin sister Faith. Now she's stuck dealing with a man she wants so much to forget and get out of town, Bramble's own bad boy Colt Lomax.

Colt didn't come back to Bramble to relive old memories. He came back to find Hope, Bramble's sweetheart, after one night of passion they shared in California, a night he wouldn't mind repeating. He doesn't do attachments and lives for freedom, but something about Hope keeps him tied to town...and it doesn't help that his sister has him arrested to keep him around for a while, much to Hope's disappointment.

However, something unexpected with tie their fates together with great satisfaction to both, if they can just admit how they really feel.

When I was first introduced to Hope in "Going Cowboy Crazy," honestly I didn't like her. She seemed spoiled and conceited. Then after reading this book I can say that I like her a little bit better now. She's really just a confused girl unsure of what she wants in life, but loves her hometown even if it is small. I found that I liked her better after this book.

Colt was perfect. As the bad boy of Bramble he lived up to his name by playing into what everyone thought of him, even Hope. He joked about going to prison and downplays his life in California. Hope suspects he's running around spending money that he didn't earn, not knowing that Colt has gone from the trailer park to the penthouse (although he would never live there) and he has no intention of changing her mind or anyone else's mind. I love that Colt is slightly vulnerable and at the same time strong and virile. I really enjoyed reading about him.

This is a great book, as was the first in the series, and I can't wait to read more by this author.

Second in the Deep in the Heart of Texas romance series revolving around the people and history of Bramble, Texas. The couple focus is on Hope Scroggs and Colt Lomax.

My Take
It's inventive, comic, and oddly romantic, although the writing in this one takes a dip. It's like Lane is still working on her writing chops. Of course, it could be simply my disappointment with the character she created in Hope Scroggs. Sure, she's believable as the girl who tries to fulfill everyone's expectations, but that she seriously thought Slate was hers?? No. Nope, I ain't buying that one.

Nor did Lane develop the Hope-Colt affair as well as it could have been. Instead it was silly twists in more of a herk and a jerk than a smooth revelation.I did like how well Lane hid Colt's success, though.

It was obvious when Colt showed up at the reception what would happen, and it was still funny!

Yeah, that bit about Faith and her obsession with hygiene doesn't really work for me either. It feels more like Lane was hunting for something, some weakness for Faith, and the disinfectant OCD seemed like a good idea. I went along with it in Going Cowboy Crazy, 1, but...maybe it just feels more false in this story??

It is cute that Lane uses the truth of the queen of a small town heading to Hollywood to make it big. What's not so cute is how stupid Lane makes the people.

It's cute, fun, and quirky...go for it.

The Story
Oh, no! He was supposed to be hers! Instead Slate Calhoun is marrying some damned Yankee. And Hope is fuming, a state that only gets ramped up when Colt Lomax appears.

It's failure with a capital "F" and coming on top of her time in Hollywood, well, it's a bad combination of emotions for a deposed Hope. Not that Colt is faring much better when confronted by both a town that hates him and a sister who won't let him go.

When word gets out that "our" Hope is knocked up, the suitors come out in droves. With courtin' gifts: boxes of candy, flowers...and a baby pig,

The Characters
Hope "Hog" Scroggs is the darling of Bramble, Texas, who made the town proud. Jenna Jay and Tessa are her younger sisters. Jenna and Burl Scroggs are the very happy parents. Happy to have Hope back from Hollywood, happy to have Faith back as part of the family. Little Pumpkin Seed is the baby's nickname.

Colt Lomax is the town bad boy who left. What no one knows is how successful he's become. Shirlene, Colt's little sister and Hope's best friend, is married to Lyle Dalton, the town's major (and only) big employer at Dalton Oil. I do love Shirlene. She's out-loud and proud and very comfortable with herself.

Slate Calhoun was Hope's best friend through high school and the school's talented quarterback. He's marrying Faith Alridge, Hope's long-lost twin (see Going Cowboy Crazy). Tyler "T-bone" Jones (he's married to Missy Leigh) has taken over the garage from his dad, Tinker, the man who saved Colt's life from falling apart. Travis Mossman is the man to whom Colt is delivering the new bike; he's also the behind-the-scenes savior in more ways than one. Sissy is Travis' wife, and his grandkids, Lily and Danny, are visiting.

Jesse James claims he's the owner of the Harley Knucklehead motorcycle. Ryan Seever is Hope's agent out in Hollywood.

Bramble's townsfolk include:
Harley Sutter is the mayor. Josephine runs the town café and makes a mean wedding cake with raspberry filling; Rachel Dean; Darla is having an "affair" with that glue gun, I swear!; Twyla is seeing Kenny Gene; Ms. Murphy is the librarian; Bud Mueller plays a mean fiddle; Bear is Rachel's cousin and a bounty hunter---he brings home the baby daddy, he thinks; Sheriff Sam Winslow will jail anyone for Shirl; and, Rossie.

Jimmy "Bucky" Higgins is the new doctor, and a former classmate of Hope's.

The Cover
It looks like it was cold wherever the cover image was shot---he's got goosebumps on that very lightly furred---and naked---chest. He's leaning up against something, one be-jeaned leg angled forward and a hand resting on his upper thigh, a big silver buckle on his belt. The background looks like a sunrise with pinks fading into a deep blue over an undulating plain.

The title is what Hope finally realizes she wants, so Make Mine a Bad Boy.

3 1/2 stars. I liked this book but not as much as the first. Hope annoyed me at times and I found her poor me routine to get old really fast. I also couldn't understand why everyone in the town called her their sweetheart when all she did was pout and complain. Colt saved the story for me and without him I do t think I could have finished. I can't wait to see what happens next in Bramble, Texas

I had a little trouble with the very beginning of this book, but once it got rolling it REALLY got rolling! A light quick read with a good level of romantic lead tension and a very fun cast of supporting characters. I really enjoyed this book!

This should definitely be more than a 3 star, it's not as good as the previous book in the series - Going Cowboy Crazy, but it's only 1/2 a star less, not a whole star. It was harder to like the main female character as she was sort of portrayed as the evil twin sister in the previous book. Overall, I really like the series and the town the books are set in, I hope the author continues to write books set in the same town.

Typical, but yet held my interest. This is the second in the series. I have no desire to go back to read the first book, but I do want to read the next book.

3.5 stars. For a cliche-riddled romance novel, this was exactly what I needed it to be. The hero is damaged but strong, the heroine is feisty but vulnerable. I felt like I should have read the previous book about Faith to get a better handle on the complex relationships, but it was an enjoyable 328 pages even without the full backstory.
One thing that kind of annoyed me and almost made me drop the rating to 3 stars was a poorly placed flashback that confused me as a plot device. That aspect was very poorly done.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as I did the first one.
Going cowboy crazy had an amusing premise and Slate was also awesome.
Here we have Hope and Colt.
Hope is spoiled, and for about the first half of the book it did get annoying to listen to her complain about her sister Faith and how Faith stole her life.
Colt had a lot of potential for me to love him. I mean, shoulder length black hair, tight black tucked in t shirt, worn jeans, boots and a motorcycle. Like, damn.
But there wasn't much romance there. Not a lot of swooning or courting, rather just chance encounters at the hands of Sherlene and Faith, or otherwise Hope trying her damndest to avoid the "motorcycle bum".
I can't help but feel like this book could have been more.
As it is though, it was okay.
Mostly just a lack of communication on how they both feel that the other hates them.
The whole pregnancy factor was interesting. It was funny and heartwarming the whole town would send a bounty hunter to Los Angeles to find the man who knocked up Hope.
It was nice to see how Colt and Hope were good for eachother. Like how Colt knew how to handle Hope's tantrums.
But like come on now, Colt really wasn't sure if he loved Hope and he had that tattoo? pfft
