I love seeing the Christian god go through phases: first he is a tall man you can wrestle with in the woods, later he is in a sort of League of Gods where their followers have miracle competitions. Then he becomes a sort of cosmic god (John 1:1).
As a kid (or adult) hearing all this in church, these are all presented as simultaneous facets, but when put chronologically, the word evolution is apt.
Great book. I re-read it from time to time. Should be sold shrink-wrapped along with Before the Dawn. Together they take you from pre-Neolithic all the way through the Bronze Age. They explain how we got our brains and then what we started to invent with those brains.

I debated between 3 and 4 stars due to some repetition of ideas and finding it slower going than I expected, but this is worth it.
An excellent history of our beliefs which provides the best explanation I've read so far of how our beliefs have evolved. Brilliant.

A fascinating history of the evolution and developments of religion. Very well told.
The strength of the book is its insights into the development of the Hebrew God from polytheism to monolatry to monotheism and its discussion of the influence of the historical and cultural context on the development of theology about the one Hebrew God. It got a bit tedious, however, when trying to explain the concept "zero-sumness" of religions and the supposed moral progression of theology in the major monotheistic religions.
