Kafka is easily one of my favorite writers. He is Haunting and quizzical, disturbing and delightful. This collection contains his short stories, the work that Kafka is most known for. Naturally "The Metamorphosis" is just as good as you have been told, but I'd argue that "In the Penal Colony" is the best offering here. It affected me physically.
This was a jumping in point for Kafka's writing for me. Since then, I have read a couple of his novels and most of his stories a few times. Each read gets better and better, so I cannot recommend this highly enough.

I love, love, love Kafka's writing style, although I have to admit that I understood maybe half of the stories. Lots of nuance, symbolism and surrealism, as well commentary on the human condition that still seems relevant even today.
Out of the longer stories, my favourite was probably 'In The Penal Colony', but 'The Metamorphosis' and 'The Stoker' were both excellent too.

I'm not even close to being smart enough to rate Kafka and his writing.
Definitely something everyone should read though, there's nothing really quite like it, in this case the man is famous for a reason.

You gotta love Kafka's combos of human and animal (and insect) existence... I think, perhaps the most disturbing but rivetting story was "In the Penal Colony", but my favorite whimsy story was "Address to the Academy."
