Gorgeous, heartbreaking, painful, raw and powerful.
There is something intangible and innate that separates good poetry from great poetry. There's a hint of something that i cannot for the life of me put into words. It's just... either it's there or it's Not There.
But it absolutely is here, in "everything i became". It's beating through every word. This is a collection that should come with a heavy content warning for sexual trauma, but it doesn't dwell in a space devoid of hope.
I will say, although I do consider myself a follower of the Christian faith, a lot of what's classified and published as "christian poetry" rings hollow to me. However, that's absolutely not how I felt reading the poems featuring faith as a predominent feature in this collection. Which was a joy and a blessing!
All in all, 10/10. An important addition to conversations about abuse, consent, and surviving trauma, especially in Christian spaces, and a powerful introduction to Bush's writing as a whole. <3
