This was not at all what I expected after the first three Earthsea books, but I didn't dislike it. It was interesting to watch Le Guin grapple with the world she created. At times events felt overly foreshadowed and characters reacted to things in inhumanly flat ways.

very different from every Earthsea book that's come before. a quieter and darker book that feels like it's flipping the whole world of Earthsea upside down and looking at it from the other side. i have to be honest that i wanted more for tenar, but uklg pokes and prods you into asking yourself what "more" could mean. i think i focused on the wrong things in this book for a long time while reading it, but as usual found myself loving it more as the story began to draw up towards an ending. this is one i will have to reread in the future.

What can I say about this book? Do you want some philosophy with your fantasy? Want to think about what it means to be human? What does it mean to be a woman, a man, a being? What does power mean, and how does it defy you? Who are you when your power is stripped away or you realize you have never had any? This is no grand adventure of men and magic, but rather a true introspection examining humanity, gender roles, Earthsea, and ourselves. This book might not be everyone's favorite book, but I think everyone should read it and take a good long think.
