Another great Growing Up ... in Australia anthology! This one is so important for understanding the stigma around disability and how inaccessible society is for the majority of disabled people. Once again this was a collection of diverse voices providing unique perspectives. One common theme was many of the authors expressed reluctance to accept the label “disabled” which says a lot about how society responds to those who identity as that. It was encouraging to see them later embrace it and use it as a strength. A lot of the stories emphasised that they don’t need fixing and often what made it harder for them to accept their own disability was that other people always thought they were broken and needed fixing. This has helped me reframe my perspective on my sister who has a chronic mental illness and it’s only after years that we’re all beginning to accept that perhaps this is the live she needs to live, rather than something we can support her to overcome. Overall these voices are really important to listen to and I would recommend the audiobook to bring them to life. Highly recommend!
