The dry, almost monotonous writing style certainly takes some getting accustomed to, but it becomes vital and indispensable as a means of expressing the abject emptiness and disappointment these characters feel as the go through the motions of having a good time, with people they don’t actually like very much but need desperately.

3.75 stars. I don’t know that I necessarily love Hemingway’s clipped style of prose and this particular book was an audiobook read by William Hurt we excelled in distinguishing between characters with different voices, accents, and intonations, but who’s reading of the first person narration I found pretty stilted and odd.
