I hated these characters and their relationship, I hated the funhole, and this book was bizarre and I feel gross. But…maybe that’s the point.

this book kind of blew me away and I feel like the last quote really sums it up...
Spoiler"what if somehow I'm crawling blind and headfirst into my own sick heart, the void made manifest and disguised as hellhole, to roil in the stink of my own emptiness forever."

I'm really disappointed David Cronenberg never made a movie of this.

This is the gist of the novel without spoilers: two junkies find a creepy hole in a room and start experimenting with it. The hole seems to favor one of them, and the other gets jealous. The reader then sees how the two junkies, and a few others, are changed by the hole and its power.

This is the first character driven horror novel I have read - there really isn't much plot here. It's all about how the hole influences and changes its chosen person, and thereby, those close to them. It's about toxic relationships, addiction, obsession, transformation, the desire for transcendence, and love.

Having said that, I don’t think this is my kind of book. I really need some plot movement in my horror, but if you're in the mood for some reflective, character driven horror then you found your book!
