I got really invested in the book, but felt the resolution was a little too quick.

The Sugar Queen tugged at all the heart strings. I cried. I laughed out loud. I got completely invested in the characters (support and leading). It took me a few chapters to get drawn in, but once I got over that initial slump, I really enjoyed this story.

This book read so fast, I can't believe it's over! My heart sighed contentedly as I finished the last sentence. Brandi and Trap were childhood sweethearts and when Trap returns to Emerson Pass after 10 years, these two must face their past and reason their relationship ended. I love how Tess Thompson weaves the legacy of Alexander and Quinn Barnes(from The School Mistress of Emerson Pass) into the present day life of Emerson Pass. Tess writes realistic and complex character relationships. I related to Brandi and her difficult relationship with her mother.
This series is unique in how the books alternate from past to present. I can't wait to learn more about the other fascinating residents, both historical and contemporary, of Emerson Pass.

I say the same thing every time I read a book by Tess Thompson - she is one of my favorite authors, and this is yet another homerun for her.

This is the second book in the Emerson Pass series, and it’s just as amazing as the first one. This book is set in current time, but it brings in a lot of the lore and history from the first book. This book also mentions some of the people/companies in the Cliffside Bay series, which I really love.

The characters in this book are just as amazing as all of her characters are. It’s a very emotional book - there is a lot of tragedy, but there is a lot of happy moments as well.

I cannot wait to see what Tess Thompson comes out with next!

I was bored and the author dropped out of the event I was attending.  Didn't see the point in finishing the book after that.

This was the second book in the Emerson Pass series but the first set in present day. While the first book in the series revolved around the founders of Emerson Pass and this book is centered around the later generations of those founding members.

Brandi Vargas is the Sugar Queen, she owns the local bakery and has been heartbroken since she sent the love of her life, Trapper, away to fulfil his dreams 10 years ago. During those 10 years Trapper lived the life as a professional hockey player but after an injury he is now retired and has decided to come home to Emerson Pass. He has never stopped loving Brandi and is determined to win her love again. What Trapper doesn't know is that Brandi has a secret and she is scared she will lose Trapper all over again if she tells him.

This book was everything I wanted and more of a second chance romance. Brandi and Trapper were tugging at my heart strings right from the start and pulled me along all the way to their happily ever after.

I am so excited to see where this series will go!

This book started out with a good premise, but there was just so much added in that was unnecessary. I did not like the really long journal entries from the past, it felt very shoe horned in. It just felt like the story was going to end nicely then some other conflict pops up. The mother of the main character was so unlikable, and extremely cruel.

Dnf as although she weaves a good story with great characters, the sexual aspects plus blaspheming meant I could not comfortably continue to read it. Disappointed, looked like it may have been a good story.

The Sugar Queen (Emerson Pass Contemporaries #1) by Tess Thompson – I spent a large chunk of this book internally yelling at Brandi to just tell him the truth and waiting for it all to blow up. Man her mom is a piece of work. If you are in sad avoidance mode…this may need to stay on your tbr pile for a while longer, but it was a really sweet second chance story. This is a really sweet community full of nosy matchmakers, so I can’t wait for book 2. Happy Reading!

It's back to Emerson Pass in Book 2, but to the modern-day Emerson Pass where the descendants of Alexander and Quinn Barnes and friends from Book 1 now reside.

Chapter 1 begins with a bang - no slow easing in, scenery descriptions etc - just a plain, honest confrontations of two high-school ex-sweethearts ten years after a messy break-up.

After the confrontation we learn more about Brandi and Trapper - their pasts; their families and the modern day Emerson Pass.

The story moves fast and touches on sensitive topics which are central to the development of the story.

I enjoyed the 'flashbacks' to the first book that link with this book. The references to well-loved characters from "Cliffside Bay" are also fun.

Although this is a second book in a series, it can be read on its own as book 1 is not essential to the story, but I would recommend having read book 1 (& the "Cliffside Bay" series) in order that some things make a bit more sense and of course to experience the magic that they portray.
