ok, i didn't like We the Animals really at all so i started the book ready to roll my eyes and was pleasantly surprised by this total stunner. beautiful writing and so many interesting thoughts and angles and intellectual boldness that i've been waiting for from gay lit -- love to see him winning.

i encourage anyone who finds this 'formally audacious' to revisit works such as chicka chicka boom boom because it is literally just a picture book. a brilliant one!!! so is chicka chicka boom boom.

it would be 5 stars if not for what felt like a self-indulgent and pointless final 15%
