The prequel to The Girl With All The Gifts. I was excited to dig into this one. It started off well, and I did love the ending, but the middle was a bit of a slog. One of the main characters, a fifteen year old savant, Stephen Greaves, seems to be on the autism spectrum, and all of the crew of the expedition except for one woman seems to dislike him. It makes for conflict for the story, but doesn't feel believable. Is it really that all of these people have no empathy, or understanding for this boy, who seems to have saved their lives in one way or another several times along the way? So, most of the characters come off as turd human beings, which maybe is what the author was going for. I won't give away the ending, but it was nice to see some characters from the first book reappear.
