Too long, got slightly repetitive at some point. I also didn't connect with the main character after a while. It feels like he never learns, never moves past the beginning point. (Maybe mild spoilers ahead) Yes, I get it, he is traumatized, but you'd think he'd learn to control his temper after the first few times he gets himself and others in big trouble because of it. Revenge is great, but use your head for a second please...

I found this a real slog at times, I'm not going to lie. I think a lot of the issue was down to personal taste - this is a heavily plot-driven book, with explicit violence and torture, none of which I usually warm to. In the case of Nophek Gloss, however, I didn't click with the characters at all - particularly our protagonist Caiden. I found reading about him actively frustrating at some points, and his character development didn't ring true for me. I also despised Threi from the moment he first appeared onwards. I was much more invested in the background characters, who we sadly get to learn little about. As if so often the case with series I don't get on with, I found the epilogue more intriguing than a lot of the main plot - I will try to avoid being tempted to read the sequel, however.
2.5 stars, rounded up to 3.
