I went into this book thinking that it would give me a cozy fantasy vibe. And it kind of did.. in that it was pretty slow paced and character focused. The characters are what made the book for me, I liked all of them and just wanted everyone to be happy. I was definitely interested in the mystery plot but I think it fell flat, it very much seemed like everything came together in like the last 20 pages of the book. I will definitely be reading the sequel.

When I started this book I didn’t know if I would like it. I have read a variation on the “young girl is denied a place in academia/wizard school and prices them wrong” so often that it is a story that doesn’t really appeal to me. BUT that’s only kinda what half of this book is about (Onna turns out to be such a lovely and sweet character I loved her). The other half is a troll and her eventual human lover, who is the most submissive human equivalent of a half drowned cat, getting together and then going on a revenge quest and it is honesty one of the best romances I’ve read in years. Like, I honestly feel like any complaints I had about the length (which are mostly that I think it should have been longer or that Jeckran and Tsira should have shown up in Hexos earlier to bring the storylines together in a more cohesive way ) are overshadowed by the fact that I loved these characters so so much.

Wizards and witches and trolls— oh my! This had some wonderfully quirky characters to root for and some great character pairings. I liked the magic and the mentorship in particular. The romance plot points didn’t work as well for me, and the pacing felt uneven. I think this could have been a great novella with some slow points cut out from the middle. In all, though, a fun fantasy with grit and heart.
