After finishing Ice Like Fire, I found myself feeling the way I did after I read Glass Sword. I didn’t like Glass Sword, and as much as I don’t want to say it, I’m disappointed in Ice Like Fire. The difference is, I don’t mind not liking Glass Sword because I didn’t really like Red Queen either (not as much as other people do), but I really liked Snow Like Ashes and I was really looking forward to Ice Like Fire.

I’ve mentioned before that I love the setting. Primoria, with its 8 different kingdoms is very intriguing. I love the way that each kingdom has its own defining characteristics, the way the people looked, the way they dress, their interests and many other things. In Ice Like Fire, we get to travel to the other kingdoms that were only briefly mentioned in Snow Like Ashes. Summer, Yakim, and Ventralli are so different from each other as well as the other kingdoms and it’s very interesting to read about. But at the same time, it could get confusing. There’s so much information to remember that sometimes it can be difficult to keep track of which king/queen is from where, what capital is in which kingdom and things like that. It’s great that there’s a map, it’s very useful.

One of the biggest problems I had with this book is the fact that almost nothing happened. I have to say that I was so bored reading the first two-thirds of the book. I can’t even say half because I don’t think anything interesting really happened until almost the end of the book. And by the time something actually happened, it was too little too late. I was already bored and even though the ending was interesting, I couldn’t make myself care anymore. Everything is way too easy for the characters, there is no challenge at all and I don’t find it believable. I actually slammed my head against the wall sofa and rolled my eyes so many times.

I told my friend that Ice Like Fire could be split into 5 parts. One part should be combined with the first book, one part with the last book, and the other 3 parts should just go away. I’m sorry if I sound mean, but I’m just so sad. I feel like Snow Like Ashes could be great as a standalone, maybe some things could be added to answer the unanswered questions, but otherwise, it could be a standalone. I’m still going to read Frost Like Night eventually, but I have a feeling I already know what’s going to happen.

DNF at 12%

From the first page, I've noticed that the writing style has significantly improved from the first book. I was determined to soldier through the whole trilogy and I thought that would be enough to make me finish it but I realized I was wasting time.

Yes, there were improvements but the story still lacked that essential something that would draw me in. I don't know if I'll ever pick this up again so for now, it's a DNF.

This book was slightly disappointing. While I enjoyed Smithey story as a whole, it was incredibly slow paced. This book was almost 500 pages and it felt like nothing happened till the last 100 pages. While it was nice to continue on with the story there just didn’t seem to be much here. I felt like I was able to guess all but a few things that happened in the ending. I’m hoping that the 3rd book finishes on a stronger note.

8/10 y 4/5 estrellas

Was hesitant going into this novel but I actually really enjoyed it even with all of the negative reviews floating around.

So yes this book was kinda slow burning but I actually wasn’t too bothered by that. I loved being able to explore more about Winter, Summer and many of the Rhythm Kingdoms. The plot definitely took an interesting turn that I was not expecting at all. Personally I thought Angra was dead and that the Decay was just spreading and finding new hosts. TBH I wasn’t too far off with my prediction but it still shocked me how amazingly everything tied in with one another.

Theron. Ok so I knew something was up with him. He for starters was so hell bent on opening the chasm and having power that he would steal the key off of Meira and set out by himself. Honestly I thought in the first novel the love was all a ploy so he could get closer to Meira and then steal the magic chasm. But I was wrong, he did actually love Meira but I was not aware that Angra was controlling him.

Mather. Well I actually didn’t mind his perspective. I wasn’t too sure about the Thaw at first but maybe their characters will grow on me. But Alyson’s death and Mathers rebellion really helped with his character development and I felt like the tables were turned this novel. Instead of liking Theron I liked Mather.

The plot twist was so thrilling. The last 100 pages really kicked me in the guts and I was cheering Meira on along the way. I definitely wasn’t expecting the ending I got but I think it really helps set up for a great finale, can’t wait!
