I loved these books as a kid! They were so bizarre and so funny. The idea of an evil, vegetable-sucking vampire bunny was so hilarious, but the cat was the best character, IMO. I'd love to read these again sometime just for fun.

I read this book with one of my 4th grade students, and while both her and I enjoyed the twist of having a spooky story with an animal narrator, there are some issues I have with the book.

I know it is older so inevitably there is some out-of-date references and terminology. For the most part, these were things we could just skip over or I could teach her about. My problem though was the reference to Roma people as “gypsies” which is now largely regarded as a slur. It’s frustrating to encounter this and then try to figure out how to handle it while teaching. For me, this is not a book I would reach for in the future as a teacher.

Checked this out at the library for my son, and though initially he was reluctant and skeptical, by the time he finished he was singing its praises. I'm heartened to find that a book I so loved as a child stands the test of time and captivates my own child.
