Is this a five-star book? No. Is it kind of predictable? Yes. But it was eventful enough for me to finish it. A lot of people were going crazy about this book and I completely understand why. The whole isolated village setting was really and the characters are likable. Like I actually wanted to read about them. Which is rare for me. Although the ending plot twist felt unsatisfying? It was still really good though

I absolutely loved this book. Such a different type of mystery with hints of fantasy and dystopia. It drew me in right from the start and I dreaded every time I had to put the book down. I highly recommend!

In the woods - things can be misleading- and the same can be said for this novel. I found it a slow read and not holding my attention until the last 50 pages. Not a favorite.

Maggie St. James is an author of children's books. Some people said her stories were too sinister and that they encouraged children to leave their homes and go in search of "the underground". This is a fictional place in her stories where Eloise, the main character of one of her books, changes into something very dark... a monster.

❝He went over the border [...] Where dark things live.❞

After the tragic death of a child who read the book and went looking for "the underground", Maggie retreated to her home and hardly ever left. She was devastated by the sad news. One day, she went to visit her parents and a few days later her car was found parked along a road far away from her home. Five years had passed, and nobody knows anything about her. It's like she just vanished herself.

❝We all have something we'd like to forget, some broken piece of ourselves we'd like to bury in the grave of our minds.❞

Travis Wren has a gift (or a curse). He can see people's past by touching any object that belonged to them. That's why Maggie's parents contact him. He might be able to find her. The only clue he has is a word: Pastoral. But what is it?

❝Guilt is a beast. And it might just kill you if you let it.❞

During the early '70s, a group of people bought a land deep in the mountains. This place was previously inhabited by a group of German immigrants in the beginning of 1900. They abandoned the place because they were waiting for the railroad, but it never came. The new inhabitants of this forgotten land wanted to live in harmony with nature, go back to their roots, and live peacefully. They called this place "Pastoral".

❝There is no history in a place until we make it, until you love a life worth remembering.❞

No soy lectora de misterios o thrillers pero este me gustó muchísimo. La ambientación, la escritura, las emociones, 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 definitivamente agregaré los otros libros de la autora a mi lista 🫶🏽

That was a wild weird ride and I loved every minute of it. Slow build that unleashes at a fast pace towards the end…so good. I somewhat predicted what was going on a little over halfway through the book but couldn’t quite piece some things together. Couldn’t put it down. Worth trying if you like mystery and fairy tales!
