The New One: Painfully True Stories from a Reluctant Dad by Mike Birbiglia

I seemed to have read a lot of dad books this year. This is one by a comedian who admits he didn’t want to be a father but commits to it anyway. I enjoyed the poems his wife sprinkled in, his honesty, and every story about sleepwalking. And the chlorine constant of the YMCA.

If you liked his latest 1.5 hour Netflix special, you'll love his audiobook!

This is about 5 hours long, and is pretty much the same as the special, just with more details and the added bonus of his lovely wife reading her incredible poetry pieces.

I have never read anything more honest. It is highly uncomfortable at times, but it is also hilarious and wonderful, and the poems sprinkled throughout tie it all together so beautifully. I saw the stage show, so many of these stories I already heard, but it didn't matter a bit. Fully recommend the audiobook, this was meant to be heard in their voices.

I bought this for Nick when I was pregnant, and we started reading it together this summer, but I just now finished it. I think it was actually a really good discussion about how the relationship between a married couple changes through pregnancy and child rearing more than actually being a dad. Or maybe that is just because that is what I'm experiencing/wasn't as prepared for in all of this.

Also very funny! You may know Mike Birbigilia from some This American Life stories, most notably his sleepwalking incident at a La Quinta Inn in Walla Walla, WA. A bit David Sedaris like (humourous personal stories) so I liked it!

Parenting ain’t no joke! Do any of us really know what we are doing? Its quite clear we have absolutely no idea 99.9% of the time. Birbiglia nails it when he says “I’m mostly scared. This monkey in a jumpsuit stares at me with this look like – I don’t know anything. Do you know anything? I’m thinking, I don’t know anything either.”

The New One is a collaboration of “painfully true stories from a reluctant Dad” and his wife the poet and perhaps the little less reluctant half.

The New One actually started as an off-Broadway show and moved to Broadway. Now also a Netflix series, the book contains new material as well as poetry that Jen wrote.

I thought the collaboration of stories and poetry was sweet, funny and so very true. I think parents will appreciate this dark and laugh-out-loud read.
