I tag this Lovecraftian but this is not Lovecraftian at all.
I am not talking about the first one since I made a dedicated review.
This second story is about a group of goverment people who are trying to retrieve some music from a guy in the late 30's who went recording music from the rural south of USA.
OF course, it's a nice touch and I could see go deep into lovecraftian stuff on those marshes but no. The writer was more interested in telling how evil white men are and even people who try to good stuff - in this case perserve black music history - they are just doing for themselves, and they feel superior and are virtual signalling. WTF? So a WHITE people cannot love BLACK music? IT makes no sense. Then this girl who is with him, which is black, just go on and on how racist he is and even the person who perserve the black music from the 30's. Yes, he was so racist but without him that part of history would be gone. But, Alas that's the problem with world today. The author is more focus on pointing how all the flaws white people have (the writer being white) then really telling the story. IT's awful, white people doing this. I can understand (don't accept) but can nderstand black people feeling the way they feel BUT white people doing is just idiotic - It distract me from reading to be honest and by the end I was just not there. IT's not horror. Well it's horror yes, it's horror in the mind of the writer and horror knowing that people think like this.

Interesting stories and much more literary than the title and cover had led me to believe. I thought the writing style was really strong.

For me, books like these (cosmic horror) usually fall into two camps: dense and hard to get into or those that suck you in and bury you under dread as you progress (either dread from the plot or dread of eventually reaching story's end).
This was definitely in the latter camp. I think I've read other stories by this author but I can't be sure. In any case, it was a brilliant couple of stories and he is definitely a master of the new cosmic horror. I enjoyed HP Lovecraft in my earlier reading years but this was way better and I'm glad he's out there.
