This is a fantastic read. McCombs has done an amazing job of escaping into a fae realm where the Fae worship their Mortal Queens. It captured my attention from the very beginning and kept me fully engaged. It has some good world building that can easily be built upon as the story continues. Thae is determined to discover what it means to be a Mortal Queen, and she doesn't always like what she hears. Instead of giving in to her fate, she is determined to change it, not only for herself but all queens. The book ends on a cliffhanger that left me eager for book 2.

First, let me start this by saying, yes, I am a fantasy reader, but I don’t normally read books with Fae and Fantastical magic realms that are separated from the human world. BUT, I will read anything @victoria_mccombs writes. The way I squealed when this arc came into my inbox (thank you @enclavepublishing!)

We have a story that just dumps you right into the action and immerses you right from the beginning. I love when I am immediately gripped by a story and this one pulls you in straight from chapter one.

The characters are intriguing and draw you in. Thea is stubborn and strong. She fights for what she wants and has a fierce loyalty to her family. Bastian is roguish, but in a good way. You want to like him, but there is something secretive there hiding beneath the surface that you can’t quite discover.

There was political intrigue, deception, secret deals, mysterious paintings, romance, suspense, chess matches…so much wrapped into one story. AND THE ENDING. THE ENDING, Victoria. I am going to be on the edge of my seat until I get book 2 and book 1 isn’t even released into the world yet.

Go preorder this one. You won’t regret it.

I was sent an arc from the publisher. My opinions are all my own.
