So subtle and quiet. Kind of devastating. Memory, language, failed dreams, womanhood, migration— all form layers and layers to make this

This book is billed as a novel, but it reads as a detached memoir. Reviews call it introspective, taking us into deep paradoxes. Those, I disagree with & am more of the camp of those calling its language sparse & its objectivity unrelenting.

Nunez relates some rather interesting lives, but does so in such a clinical manner, it could be the report of an overworked social worker. We never entered into these lives, but continually watch through an impervious barrier that keeps out every stimulus but sight.

Complex characters, interesting histories, good use of language, yet I couldn't wait for the book to be over.
