I was so conflicted to continue this book. The whole court/political whatever wasn’t explained very well for me and Kat being “a lady in waiting” was so random and the estate storyline idk was just all weird. I almost stopped up until like page 500 and I was finally like okay it’s getting good. I did like the back and forth with Kat and Bastian and it kept me going although I wish there had been more, he was very absent a lot of the time. I do think that the very real life issues in this were executed so well, the way Kat’s trauma is woven into why she is so obedient although it was frustrating at times it made sense! And Bastian’s response to it just made me think how much I love men written by women

Was some of the thinking of our FMC repetitive and annoying at times? Yes. Like girl. "He really does like me. JK now I don't know...." -___- I know she's got issues but still, lol.
Did I still enjoy every second of this book? Also yes.
It's so refreshing to read a FMC who is not only older but has experienced some life before being thrust into this world. She's married! She hates her husband! She's human! She doesn't make stupidly poor decisions because she's 19 and feels like she has something to prove!

I will say: this definitely leans heavier on the romance side than the fantasy side. The plot was fine I guess but the characters were finer.
Bastian is a very good morally grey MMC and I do not regret reading this book at all. Off to book 2!!!

The only ine in the series I gave only 3 stars as it was not a fanatasy world I expected. It was too posh and too focused on the court life.
However, the characters were certainly inviting and the plot twists on spot.
This one is a great introduction to the important topics that are to be developed further.
The FMC is acceptable, little annoying, but fine. While the MMC is a shady as it gets.
I strongly recommend reading this one as you are up for a treat as the series progresses.

This was ok. I like the court and systems and magic. The couple were just kind of boring though. The spice was ok but repetitive….i can’t decide if I want to finish the series.
