After watching the Kase-san movie, I really wanted to see more from this couple. I really did enjoy this first volume, so if you did like the movie even just a bit I really think this this is worth reading. It's a mostly standard high school yuri, but it's got it's own charm to it.

Art: I really like the art, it's not the most detailed, but it's very cute and works with the feel of the comic. It's cutesy and has a bit of a sketchy feel to it. The panels are very lively, it's hard to describe. Like Takashima will add something like flowers to the page, it's simple, but it really gives off a sweet fun vibe. The expressions are amazing. They are my favorite part of the art. The style's got a fairly unique feel to it.

Character: I've read around 5 or so yuri so far, so I may be a little more analytical of this part. For romance characters, they're fine. But they do their job because they're so charming and likeable. And Takashima does at least give the characters hobbies- Yamada is a gardener and Kase is a track star. I like when romances do that, it's simple but adds some more flavor to the story. For the first volume I think Takashima did a decent job at not making them too run off the mill. They're still a bit basic, but they're so likeable I can excuse that.

Story: The story is a bit of a standard start to a yuri, but it doesn't waste time. Plus the cute/fluff moments feel unique. It doesn't feel copy and paste. Sure there's the whole pining and "we're both girls", but only for the first volume. And the fluff moments, they're just really sweet. Like at one point Kase asks Yamada to cheer her on at a race. It's a good starter's yuri I think too. I can't find much to complain about, besides maybe it being a bit too safe or basic.

Chapter review: (Apologies for the short or repetive descriptions
Morning Glories- I quite like the intro to our two leads and also their new friendship. It's a very good intro to the feel of the comic and the characters.
Bicycle- A bit of angst and pining in this chapter. But it's not too drawn out. I really felt for Yamada feeling lonely without Kase. Also them riding the bike together is so cute.
Love song- We get to see Yamada without Kase. I think it's important to not completely revolve around the two leads, and expand the world a bit. The ending is sweet too.
Sneakers- I like how Yamada wants to overcome her flaws, she gets to have her own little arc. Kase helping her is so sweet.
Spring Breeze- The endings of the chapters are always so cute, and this one was just perfect. I like how they don't drag the pining out.

This volume is just such a treat, it's sweet, and cute. I really reccomend it to anyone looking for something to make them smile.

Reread on 6/4/2020:

Dropped from 4 to 2 stars

Wow. I'm amazed I gave this such high praise since rereading it last year. It was actually difficult reading this because of three things:

1. Yamada and Kase are not particularly interesting characters. They have one-two personality traits and one hobby each and that's it.

2. THE FUCKING REPETITION. I swear, there were points in the first chapter where Yamada made references to Kase being a girl and how she can't be interested in a girl, and if it had stayed in that chapter I would have been okay with it, but it was in the WHOLE FUCKING VOLUME. We GET IT, Yamada likes Kase but feels weird about it because they're both girls, PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF HUMANITY, MOVE ON! P.S. the constant references to Kase being "boyish" or "cooler than any boy" got old REAL FUCKIN' FAST.

3. Mikacchi is a fucking TERRIBLE friend and I straight up don't get why she's friends with Yamada. Also, why is everyone an asshole to her? What the fuck has she done that makes people pick on her all the time? It made no sense and felt super unnecessary.

That's not to say all was bad. I really like the art style and there were some charming moments between Kase and Yamada, but they weren't able to cancel out the bad.

Anyway, this is a fairly cute series and I think this is a good first volume for people new to yuri to try, but if you've read other yuri, this might disappoint you.

such a sweet manga! so many high school yuri series rely heavily on sex, drama, and toxic romance structures so to see a tender, pure friendship-turned-romance was really refreshing. the art style is good and there’s a nice balance of art to text. one critique i have is the introductions of each section reintroducing our characters, but that may be from the series’ serialized origins. still, so sweet and believable as a high school narrative. definitely recommend for yuri readers looking for something fluffier!
