This was an amazing story of grief and love. While the twist was pretty easy to pick up from context clues I think that it was delivered beautifully. I knew it would be sad but my gosh the last two chapters I bawled my eyes out. Genuinely think this was one of the best YA books I’ve read in a long time. I got hit really hard by the friendship dynamics and it caused anxiety for me (just how toxic they were) but I’m really glad that it was addressed in a realistic but hopeful manor.

This wasn’t what I expected, but I’m glad I read it. Mason Deaver depicted some of the realities of grief and mental illness (and high school) so well.

Features a non-binary protagonist but they are unlovable most of the time. I enjoyed reading their journey with gender identity but they were an overall asshole. The author confesses this though. The plot is very sad, from the death and self harm, but the main character annoyed me. It was great to see gay, trans, and non-binary characters  represented.

I cried while reading this, and I hadn’t cried for months before this. It’s my favorite book.

“He was a ghost I’d keep with me for the rest of my life.”

This book made me ache. It made me want to hug my sister and never let her go. It made me think of someone I used to love. It made me cry. It made me sad. It made me nostalgic for things I can name and things I can’t name.

But it made me hopeful.

I loved Liam. I think they were a wonderful character. I won’t spoil anything but let’s just say that I wasn’t sad when a few people were no longer in their lives.

I also really loved Marcus. I felt his love for Ethan so strongly. God it made me ache so much hearing his feelings for Ethan. But, I wish he and Liam could have still been in each other’s lives in the end. Not in a romantic way, I wish they could’ve been friends. But that’s selfish of me because it’s for the best for Marcus to move on.

I loved this book. Thank you for giving us this story, Mason.
