I knew I wasn't the right audience for this book. I've read so many with the same tropes and similar themes that this sort of just flew above my head. But it did impact me.
Grief, I think, is a universal thing so the cliches didn't matter. In some way, it affected me. Of course, it did. And I wouldn't lie this reading experience was enriched when I reached the author's short note at the end– how this entire book is not to please at all but for the author dealing with the loss of their father. It became much more meaningful and the books value was elevated to me even though I disliked following the main character. It was a good reminder that things do happen all of a sudden– both good and bad. And we just get on with it not necessarily because we wanted to or even because the universe wills us to but because existence is such a rare thing and we have eternal pressure of making our lives worth it.
It was a reflective read. Definitely had issues with the relationships and characters here but the theme and this book's value and inspiration I think is something worth spending a piece of anyone's valuable time for.

This is such a memorable book. I don't think I've ever read a book that gets at the heart of the complexity and messiness of grief the way this one does, while still having so much to say on gender, friendship, queerness, and more. I will definitely recommend this to readers who are looking for hard-hitting YA contemporaries.

What a beautiful story about a horrible inevitable life experience. Only made better by the author’s note at the end. It gave me chills.
Love the talk surrounding of pronouns, different people coming out, respecting people’s wishes, and so many other things our queer community deals with.
