I thought the relationships between Jest and Catherine was cute, although I didn't feel particularly strongly about it and wished there was more development leading into the "falling in love" bit.  Too much of the beginning half of the book felt like meandering fluff, and I question if it could have been cut down.
The last quarter of the book really was the redeeming factor of the book: I was hooked into the action and into Catherine's descent into becoming the heartless Red Queen. While I would have preferred to see Catherine undergo a slow descent into the heartlessness of the Red Queen, how Meyer wrapped up the story was well done. Overall, it's a good read if you can make it past the slow pace of the beginning.
