2 days later (and most definitely still not over this book) I give you my review:
Heartless by Marissa Meyer is one of the best, if not the best retelling of wonderland I have ever read. The descriptions, dialogue and characters are all so true to Lewis Carroll’s wonderland and all so fun!
I instantly loved every character I came across - even the villains (and the not ‘good guys’ but not quite villains) because they were so beautifully written and hauntingly brilliant.
Cathy transformation. From the patient girl who only wanted to love and base to the short tempered Queen of Hearts was done to incredibly well and even though I expected everything to go wrong for Cath, it still stabbed me in the heart when it did.
And Jest… my dear sweet Jest. I loved his eccentric character right from the beginning and I immediately fell head over heels for him just as Cath did.
As for the other new characters: Raven - although he appeared as a bird for the majority of the book - was so interesting and also slightly sinister. Mary-Ann - Cath’s maid and best friend was just the sweetest girl and their friendships ending has me in tears!
And of course, all the original characters to wonderland: Hatta who was written to perfection and reading his slow and then sudden descent into madness was so sad and yet so interesting. The Cheshire Cat - spot on yet again! I could picture him and his voice so clearly in my head!
Overall, I was an emotional wreck after reading this book and it deserves every tear she’d and every star given because it is well and truly (and madly) stunning!

edit from day after: what the author has done finally hit me the night after finishing this book. i realised it was chilling, very intelligent, beautifully creative and ties together so well. I have to move this book up to a 5 stars from 4.75. it was easy to read the whole way through because of how creative and well written it was. the ending, after thinking about it overnight, was scarier than i had initially thought. somehow i didn’t realise that Catherine was the Queen of Hearts from Alice in wonderland, so when i read the authors note it started to fit together in my head. this book is a masterpiece. Read 13th-17th jan.
