I really enjoyed this book and all, but I was reading it in public and had to use all my willpower to not start wallowing in sadness. It’s definitely not everyday you see a well written book with a bad ending. I would definitely recommend and the way it bounces off an Alice in wonderland? AMAZING. read this right now!!

This was my first Marissa Meyer book.

At the beginning I found it hard to get into. But I just kept reading and liked the story later on.

I really hated some characters but loved Jest and Catherine.

Really really hated the ending if you know you know but none the less it was a fun fairytale read

Ugh omg all she wanted was to be a baker 😞.
The start of the book was a little slow but the last 100 pages definitely did it for me yet I didn't really feel sad anymore jest cause their romance lasted like 10 pages lol but still a cute read.

Firstly, ow.
Secondly, This book definitely made me feel pain as a five-star book would, however, the making of this book is really in the last 200 pages. The first 250 pages kind of drag on and the characters seemed quite one dimensional for the bulk of the story. And do I must give it five stars. If I could rate the first half separately to the second half, I'd say 3 stars and six stars respectively, so 4 stars seemed fitting.
Now that the technicalities are out of the way, let's discuss the story. Wonderland always seemed this loops, mystic place where everyone was just weird and probably on psychedelic mushrooms. Now it's an aftermath of a tragic heartbreak put into place by fate and I will never see it the same way again, the characters have all become haunted with a story that Merissa Meyer has finally blessed and cursed us with.
A friendly warning from this bookworm though, prepare a pack of tissues and any emotional support you can once approaching the end because it is a rollercoaster of emotions and it will hurt. A lot. Even if you know exactly what's coming. You will not be spared the tears. This story can make stone cry and break the heart of the heartless. Now to delve deeper into the story.
-----------------------------SPOILERS--------------------------------------
For the early majority of the story, I was so frustrated with Catherine's character. She was spineless, never willing to upset anyone and always letting things just happen to her and letting anyone else (more often than not) decide her reaction to it. After hearing the truth from Jest, she finally grows a fraction of a spine and decides that she is going to do whatever it takes to make her dreams come true and to be happy but at the next obstacle she gives up completely. So you can understand my frustration with this girl. That is until the last 100 pages of the book. She goes through so much character growth in such a short space of time and then it's all ripped away leaving her a vacant shell of who she could have been it's haunting. Reading this story transforms the notorious Queen of Hearts from an aimless villain to a haunting character; seeing how someone could lose everything so quickly hurt. A lot. The revelation of Hatter's love for Jest and how his guilt over everything he put into place finally stopped him long enough for time to catch up to him and for him to become mad is haunting. Honestly, that's the only word I can come up with to describe everything that becomes of this book is HAUNTING.
Now to sum up how my feelings about the majority of the characters: I hate the Marquess and Marchioness (especially the Marchioness), I hate the King, I hate Mary Ann (she basically ruined Cath's life), I am so mad at Hatter, I loved Jest so much (he was such a marvellous and interesting character, he deserved so much better than what he got and it breaks my heart, even more, to know how heartbroken he will be over what became of Catherine after his death), and my heart is in tatters for the new Queen of Hearts.

took me so long to complete because it honestly was so difficult for me to get through 90% of the book. It was worth it in the end though!

The book accurately reflects and elaborates on Carroll's original world. There is silliness and rather convoluted logic that I think many find charming and I put up with to get the story. I found the actual story disappointing. It was almost amazing, but just glossed over the parts I found most interesting. I found the end to be underwhelming and the main character to be whiny and completely selfish.

Unfortunately, this novel just wasn't for me.
