There are those times when you pick up a book and expect it to be crap. But there are other times where you pick up a book and it is truly a delight to read.

This was the latter.

I honestly feel like I got lucky. This has not only great art, but a deep and rich story with weird unique characters. It’s fabulous. It reminds me of Black Butler, most likely because it is set in the same time period with a similar atmosphere.

A hidden gem!

This was a pretty good way to start things off.

Now I will say while I'm familiar with Pandora Hearts, I was never a big fan of the series. I remember reading the first chapter in a magazine and not being too interested. And then later on trying to watch the anime and never got far. The beginning of PH just felt...weak to me I guess, despite it's interesting set up at the start. It wasn't until the later chapters I started getting hooked in more. I will also say that I never felt quite attached to the main cast (Oz, Alice, Gil, etc). No, I was way more intrigued by the side characters or antagonists (Elliot, Jack, Lacie, Oswald, etc).

Now this on the other hand is different for me. I don't know why, but I liked the way this opens up and introduces our characters. The characters are interesting and I love the art. Perhaps it's because our main characters here remind me of those in PH that weren't the main cast.

*I really like the use of French terms (like mlle, mademoiselle, monsieur) and of course they work because this takes place in France~ Noe is also a gem, my favorite character right now and he'll probably remain as such. Vanitas is shrouded in mystery and certainly intriguing, he definitely acts a bit...peculiar for a supposed human, so I'm curious to learn more about his background.

The only complaint I had with it were the panels with Vanitas and the wolf-man, who I thought were one in the same -- until you see they're not. So that was a smidge confusing at first. I'm also not sure why Noe doesn't like Vanitas? There are times where he seems grateful or amazed by Vanitas and what he does, and then other times where it's like he can't stand to be in the same room as him, and then other times where he's in-between? It felt kinda choppy and all over the place, but I can roll with it simply because I understand what the author is trying to do with their relationship.

*I'd also like to add that I keep picking this back up and rereading over and over again and I hadn't even realized I had been doing so until this morning. As said in my review of another, I don't read manga much anymore, and I don't really reread them once I've finished, but this? This is different. So I think I'll put this under my favs~

Great first chapter. But overall I found this first volume bombastic, confusing, off-putting at times. The art is wonderful, the character designs too. The premise is good, but the story and dialogue itself could use some work.

Como tomo introductorio está bastante bien, no puedo opinar demasiado porque me falta mucha historia por saber pero estoy ready para ser destrozada una vez más por esta señora
