I don’t feel it’s fair for me to give this a rating. If short stories are your kind of format, definitely give this a shot. I’ve come to realize I’m not as into short stories; no hate at ALL to this book which has some impactful pieces! It’s not my jam.

I was tempted to give this book 5 stars mainly because I find the last story (and the longest) was the one that was definitely five stars, but the others were a bit of a mixed bag for me, but still all amazing.

Things I really enjoyed: I loved reading something from the perspective of a young black female author. It’s as far from my life experience as one can get, and the stories were rich with scenes, history and ideas that pushed me out of my comfort zone, which I am truly grateful for.

The main thing I didn’t enjoy was that a lot of the stories didn’t really have any clear resolution, which I’m sure is intentional on the authors part, But I would get to the end of the story, and I’d find myself wanting and needing a bit more. Perhaps that’s just my own simplistic need to have things tied up neatly even if not happily ever after versus ending so abruptly.

Some of the sentences were profound in their beauty, aching in their pain, and delightful in their turn of phrase. But I found other places where the phrasing seemed awkward and overly convoluted. Overall highly recommended.

I found that the greatest gem of this collection is the titular novella. I thought it was phenomenal and engaging. It even upset me, which is something that I haven't felt after reading fiction in a while. I did enjoy this collection overall, even with a story or two coming across as lackluster to me. I would love to read more from this author all things considered.
