I don't really know what this was about because all of them look the same and their names sound the same. No spoiler, but when the rival came back... wtf? Who was that? How did that happen? I will not be continuing this series.

Convoluted, overly dialogue heavy and somehow boring even with a kidnapping and murder attempt. There was way too much text, with no relief in between. Too many characters to keep track off, many with similar names. The art is pretty, but that's really all that's redeeming. I hate the emperor who pretends to be ignorant to get attention from the consort and who lies and pretends he hasn't slept with women, knowing the consort wouldn't like him if she knew. He is manipulative, and his good qualities can't make up for the bad enough to make him likeable. He kisses the consort while she's unconscious and again without consent when she's conscious. He says she isn't allowed to respond to this assault with a slap. I won't be continuing with this series.

In this volume: Shurei is kidnapped! Seiran's true identity is revealed! (No one is surprised.) The Black Wolf's true identity is revealed! (I am very surprised.)

My very favorite thing, though, is the side story about Shoka and Ryuki's first meeting, because (a) Shoka! (b) Ryuki! (c) adorable wee Ryuki! Shoka crying because he misses his dead wife! Ryuki earnestly steaming pork buns in a stolen helmet! Bruised empty-eyed wee Ryuki! Purple-faced choking wee Ryuki who has just had his first taste of Shoka's tea (Illustrated. Note how he is clearly purple-faced despite being a black and white drawing.)!

... I was trying to take notes so I could remember what happened in which volume, but I just cannot contain myself from tangents inaccessible to anyone who hasn't read the series and/or insufferable to anyone who doesn't already adore the characters.
