Such a fun and quick read. The book has strong flushed out characters and is super sex-positive.

This book is so average that it hurts. I am so used to incredibly written YA that it was genuinely a shock to be so generally disappointed with a book. Bennett clearly has very little grasp on teenagers and teen culture, dropping in ridiculously outdated and just generally incorrect pop culture references that completely draw you out of the story. Her protagonist, Beatrix, is pretty damn unlikeable.
She has been written with the pretence of quirkiness, but it falls flat. The same goes for our romantic lead. Bex is so judgemental (and sexist!) and the conversations between her and Jack are so awkward in a non-realistic way... in more of a trying-to-be-a-fluffier-Heathers way. The relationship of stalking is unhealthy and frankly just creepy. Also, insta-love. Not good.
Three things earned this book the second star: 1. It got somewhat better in the second half, even if the actual ending is frustrating and far too prettily and easily tied up for my tastes.
2. There were some odd quite nicely written lines scattered about the book. Barely any in comparison to the clunky, trying-to-show-off lines or the lines of bad dialogue, but a few.
3. The portrayal of Jillian, Jack's sister. While it did feel a little like she was a plot device to a) create 'suspense', b) make Bex seem artsy and deep during the art show, and c) give some depth to Jack's story and general character, it was awesome to see a schizophrenic character being treated like a person. I would have loved for Bennett to go into more detail about her, actually. Bex lists off parts of her subject's personality that she included in annotations to her portrait, but we don't get to actually find out much about Jillian bar the 'incident' and about her chain-smoking and puzzles.

My copy has the gall to compare this to John Green and Rainbow Rowell... Fuck that. John and Rainbow are exceptionally talented YA authors, and this book doesn't deserve to shine their shoes.

Anyway, eh, it was disappointing. Our book club are using the limited edition proof copies as our book for the month, and I imagine this will be an interesting discussion...

Voire même un 4,5/5 ... j'ai aimé l'ambiance qui se dégageait de cette histoire et j'ai tout de suite accroché avec les personnages !

I really loved this book so much more than I expected. It's not because the storyline is unique or new because it's not. It's a pretty classic boy meets girl story and that's okay. But it was the characters that sold me, fully fleshed beautiful characters that I just fell in love with and wanted to spend forever it. It was just a great read.

Very slow to get into. The ending would have easily made this a four however, with the spelling and grammatical errors which are pretty common, I need to finish with a 3.5 ⭐️

I adored this! Jenn Bennett really knows how to write unique characters you fall in love with.

Este libro me encanto, es fácil de leer, adictivo y es la dosis de serotonina que necesitaba para empezar bien el año <3

4.5 stars. Beautiful and poignant story, the last quarter really tugged at my heartstrings! Wonderful characters and a fluffy romance. Really enjoyed this one!
