'And Love said, to me, What if I, myself, asked you to love him less. And I stepped out into the trough between the pillars, the dry ground through the midst of the sea - the waters a wall unto me, on the right hand, and on the left.'

I’m not the biggest fan of Olds’ style, but I can appreciate a collection about excavating a relationship—a dead thing—from so many angles. Some of the poems were too “talky” for me, but the imagery was beautiful throughout.

This book got me into poetry in college. Even now I flip through it and still get inspired by some of the lines I highlighted.

This collection of poetry about one woman's divorce captures how vulnerable being in love can make people feel. The arc of how she processes changes to her marriage is beautifully constructed, but some of the poems are so similar to each other that the collection drags on a little.

One of the most harrowing, honest, and beautiful accounts of divorce I have ever read.
