Undoubtedly done by the author who would go on to write The Hunger Games. The themes of war and its effect on children were very clear, even for a middle grade book. Emotional, a bittersweet ending, and satisfying in its own way.

I read this book for the first time when I was 10 or 12 and it still makes me cry over 10 years later. The last 1/4 of the book is nonstop heartbreaking action and the kind of bittersweetness that a 12 year old has no idea how to process. This book, without a doubt, has stuck with me more than any other. I feel sick reading that last page every single time.

I enjoyed this series more than I expected. I found the ending kind of depressing. I think this series provides children with probably the best and most thorough explanation of war and it's implications. I'm not sure kids would feel so... disheartened with it as I did. Very engaging.
