If you can get through this without wanting to punch Jedi Master Jorus C'Baoth in the face you have the discipline to be a jedi.

Zahn has done some of the best Star Wars books and this is a great story that bridges the older books and George Lucas's prequels and gives you some good background on Thrawn.

If you are a fan of Thrawn or Mr Zahn this book is cool to see the backstory of outbound flight. The awesomeness stops there. Besides Thrawn, and cameos from some of the movie characters it was a dull story and moved at a dull pace. Worth the read for Zahn fans though.

Thrawn: "We have been granted a rare opportunity: the chance to meet and interact with members of a vast if hitherto unknown political entity, people with thoughts and insights different from our own...All thoughts are worth listening to, whether later judged to be of value or not. But equally important are the social and intellectual bonds we are building between us. Someday, our Ascendancy and their Republic will make contact, and the friends and potential allies we create now may well define what direction that contact will make."

Which incident tipped the balance toward the future Empire? Which collision set off explosions all the way down the galactic timeline? Three Republic smugglers are lost in the outer regions, armed only with their language skills and their wits. One group of colonists sets out on a mission that will waken something deadlier than the galaxy is yet prepared to face, while their leader is driven to push the barriers of the galaxy... and the Jedi code.

And a singular alien mind stands poised, destined either to rise to historic greatness among his own people, a champion of the oppressed, or to lose everything he calls dear, rising again as the greatest tactician in the Empire, his real motives an eternal question.

Here, at last, the fateful day. Who wants to yell "Stop!"?

Cue music...

Actually listened to this on Audiobook. It was not so much a reading, more of a radio play, with plenty of dramatic sound effects, and possibly other voice narration.
Although the jacket implied that there was much more coverage of familiar characters like Anakin and Obi-wan, they were barely involved. The book turned out to be a treat though, as we discover the origins of Admiral Thrawn and his people instead (who figure well into later books in the series). Would have been better focusing on this, and the set up for the Vong.
