This novel combines all your favorite feelings from the late 90s, early 00s movies.
Rose is a hardworking but mild-mannered journalist who is in the midst of rebuilding her life after discoving that her husband cheated on her. When her former best friend goes missing, she has no choice but to drop everything to find her.
This story hits the ground running, with an exciting flashback. Unfortunately, the pacing slows down to a trickle for much of the middle of the book. Thankfully, the story gets resuscitated in the last quarter. While the buildup was important, I would have loved slightly fewer pages so the momentum wouldn't be lost.
Much like The Woman Before, the diary element is used to give the reader background information that our main character does not get until later on. At times, I liked it and other times it felt like it didn't push the story forward as much as it could have.
Overall, I enjoyed the story but less than The Woman Before.

Rose and Eve are Ex best friends due to Eve sleeping with Cole, Rose’s husband. Eve turns up missing in from her lakefront cottage in a small town. Rose puts her investigative skills to use to find out where Eve has gone.
Whispers of the Lake had me glued to my Kindle. All my trust flew out the window when I started reading. I was pointing fingers at everyone. I loved that the chapters were short! I also really enjoyed the journal entries.
Rose is better than me because she literally put her life on the line to figure out what happened to Eve after being betrayed in the WORST WAY!!
From the moment Rose got to town something was off and she knew it. The people were moving shifty, especially the Sheriff and his family. Rory gave me the creeps. The spotty cell service had me on edge. There’s something off putting about being cut off from the outside world (calling for help).
The turning point when Rose figures out what happened to Eve had me on the edge of my seat and my heart was racing. I was scared for my girl Rose. I definitely didn’t expect the perpetrator to be right on the lake. I hate that Eve essentially put Rose into this mess/danger.
From Eve’s journal entries you got to know more about her and why she is the way she is. I wish she would’ve made better decisions and it cost her in the end. I found myself wishing that Eve was alive so she and Rose could fight about what she did.
Overall this was a very entertaining read and I would definitely recommend it!

What a MESS!
I LOVED IT!
With Rose's marriage falling apart, to take her mind off things, she decides to solve the case of her missing (former) best friend. Secrets come out, it gets messy.
I was itching for a good thriller and this was definitely it! Shanora's writing is definitely my style!
Thank you NetGalley and RB Media for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

A thoroughly entertaining dark and twisty thriller.
I absolutely tore through this book in a day, could not put it down. The tension slowly started to build and it did not let up til the end…. and the final twist, I did not see coming at all.
This is my first book by this author and it will not be my last.
