‘In the real dark night of the soul it is always three o’clock in the morning. F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote that line almost sixty years before I was born but it’s true enough today.’
Philomena (Phil) McCarthy, daughter of notorious crime boss Edward McCarthy, has gone against her family and joined the Metropolitan Police in London. Which means that both the police and her family are suspicious of her. One quiet night when she and her partner are on a food run, they receive a call to an emergency. Phil sends her partner to the emergency while she searches for a young pyjama-clad child she saw in the street.
She finds the child, who says she could not wake her mother. Meanwhile, at the scene of the emergency, a London jeweller has a bomb strapped to his chest:
‘What happens now?' asks Keegan.
'This is when I decide whether to cut the red wire or the blue wire.'
'You don't know?'
'I normally choose blue.'
'You a Tory voter?'
'A Chelsea supporter.'
The two events are related, and Phil finds herself in danger. A murdered woman, a suspicious theft, and her father seems to be caught up in the mess. Edward McCarthy has his own problems, and Phil is unsure how much she can trust him.
There’s plenty of tension in this story, some particularly ruthless and unsavoury characters as well as a mystery or two to be solved. Somehow, I missed the first novel in this series but will read it as soon as I can.
