I'm re-reading childhood favorites and the only thing I remembered about this was that they breathed together and I had apparently ENTIRELY forgotten about the men so I went in to #investigate the gay. I love so much still about robin mckinley's master hand at reimagining folktales and I noticed especially how effortlessly she switched between povs (and there was even a fair bit of animal povs, as well...).

so: not as gay as I remember, but still lovely. while the whole book could be about trying to overthrow the evil fairy (evil as in I can imagine a sympathetic prequel) it was about knitting together family and friends into a force that pernicia couldn't hope to overthrow. nice.

Actually better on the reread. I also forgot enough of it to be pleasantly surprised at some things

Pace was not consistent. Enjoyed middle and end but as hard to get into at beginning and struggled a little bit between.

I love a fairytale retelling but the thing I loved most about this one was the way that Robin fully took to heart the trope of animals loving a princess and made it one of the most heart warming and touching parts of this story. I was delighted, afraid and moved by the ways that Rosie’s animals stood beside her and participated in her most dangerous quest.

Absolutely delightful

Why is Robin McKinley so good at writing un-annoying fantasy???
This was one of hers I hadn't read before, and while it wasn't my absolute favorite, it was still goooood.

I thought that I could rely on Robin McKinley for quality story-crafting, but the narrative and characterization in this book was muddled and disappointing. I did end up finishing but only because I spent the last third of the book skimming.
