Spindle's End

Robin McKinley

3.8 AVERAGE

Loveable characters: Yes

I really enjoyed the beginning and first-ish half of this. McKinley commands the fairytale with poise. I also found myself increasingly frustrated by the distance between the reader and Rosie in the second half, the telling instead of showing, and was disappointed by Rosie’s ending and character arc :(

Gorgeous prose, incredible (and I mean INCREDIBLE) worldbuilding that seamlessly blends high fantasy and cozy realism, and a nice dash of humor... but this just isn't for me. I read for character work first and foremost, and I'm just not in love with the cast here enough to make up for the meandering plot.

This was a really wonderfil, and unusual, sleeping beauty re-telling.  It reads like those rambling story tellers who have to tell you about 10 other side stories before they get to the main story.  Which, was fascinating and fun, but could get a little difficult to stay focused.  So just prepare yourself for some flowery language and meandering storytelling.

Beautiful writing (wish I could write like this). A very enjoyable re-telling of Sleeping Beauty. There was plenty of original ideas, lore and twists to keep you wondering. I loved Rosie and her animal friends.
The reference to whittling made me think of Shaun, but in a happy way.
