MIcKinley is a master, taking bits of a structure from a well known children's tale and weaving an incredible tapestry of a new story. She creates a whole world for her setting and her attention to detail makes it vivid and lovable. Her characters, though based on cut outs from a fairy tale, are real, diverse, and compelling. Lastly, the book twists and turns, leading to unexpected places and turning conventions on their head. This is one of my favorite books of all time.
