"What does it mean to be good 'for your age'? Am I good at anything for my age? If I eventually get good at something, will I be too old for it to matter? How can you tell if you're actually good at something, and not just good 'for your age'?"

This was not for me. I felt like I got dropped into the middle of a story where I was already expected to know what was going on but I didn't have a clue. I didn't connect with the ... humor (I don't know if it's supposed to be humorous????). I wasn't even a huge fan of the art. I just found it weird and confusing and not really enjoyable to read.

I first discovered Michael DeForge through Very Casual, his collection of short comics. While that book was a strange trip into many different stories and places, all with their own arcane rules, Sticks Angelica, Folk Hero is a more cohesive story, though it certainly doesn't lose it's sense of surrealism.

Sticks Angelica is the middle aged daughter of a politician who has decided to go and live among the animals of the forest. Perhaps I am making this sound too normal. Thinking back to what actually happens in the comic, nothing seems all that "out there" about it. Sticks lives with the animals. A rabbit is in love with her, and an eel in love with the rabbit. Geese are jerks. It's the way this story is told that makes it such a surreal and enjoyable experience. Much is told through internal monologue of the characters. It all comes off as a bit sad, yet there is an underlying layer of wonder at the universe and nature.

I'm not quite sure how to properly describe this book any further, but know that it is worth your time.
