I read it twice last night and am still flipping through it this morning. I always harp on the fact that comics and/or illustration are my favorite mediums for storytelling (imo the BEST, all the way back to cave paintings, but I'm willing to concede some subjectivity here). There's more depth in these 100 pages than you see in entire movies even if this is a smaller story. The way a comic can stretch or squish time; you have a two-page spread that just focuses on a character walking in front of another one afternoon, a study in pacing and shifting, these very minute moments in human movement, then another several page spread encompasses hours driving at night with flashbacks and rainy scenes, zooming out in both time and space while depicting a very interior moment with one of the characters. It's brevity is also a sight to behold, where one second we're in a car talking and we pan out to a factory, a protest. Sometimes memories appear without explaination. There are moments where you only see something once and it's never seen again. May this is a fault to the book for some but it feels better to me when you let things linger over what comes after. It adds to the atmosphere and also feels more realistic for the story, where you just kind of absorb things growing up and aren't fully aware of what surrounds you. It's mostly funny to me that I've seen this book on the library shelves for a couple years and for whatever reason the cover made me think this wasn't going to be my thing but it completely blew me away! I'm still going to read it at least one more time before returning it.

A one sitting read. Quiet and austere, but also quite moving. Beautiful book design.

A short graphic novel depicting the harsh reality of being a full time caregiver and single parent. Charlene is a full time nurse who struggles to stay on top of caring for her aging father and young son. When her father suffers a tragic accident she is barely holding it together. Then her hippie brother shows up out of nowhere and adds fuel to the fire. Where has he been all these years and how dare he try to criticize her life. An honest and painful look into caregiving that many will understand and empathize with.
